Steam rising off the sauna at dusk

London · Est. 2019

Hot, cold, quiet

A birch-fired sauna and two cold plunge barrels on the water. One hour, twelve people, no phones on the benches.

How it works

Heat, cold, rest — two or three times round

There is no correct way to do this, but if it is your first time, this is the shape most people settle into.

  1. Guests on the upper bench of the sauna
    01

    Sit in the heat

Ten to fifteen minutes on the bench. Lower is cooler if the top is too much — nobody is keeping score.

  2. A cold plunge barrel with the lid off
    02

    Get in the cold

Straight into the barrel. Thirty seconds is plenty. Breathe out slowly on the way in and it stops being a shock.

  3. Someone wrapped in a towel on the terrace
    03

    Do nothing

The bit people skip and the bit that works. Sit on the terrace until you stop feeling cold, then go again.

I went for the sauna and stayed for the ten minutes afterwards where nobody talks to you. It is the only hour in the week I do not check my phone.

First time in a cold plunge and I lasted about nine seconds. The person on the desk had clearly seen it a thousand times and just said "that counts".

Seven in the morning, in January, with the river steaming. Worth the early alarm on its own.

Booked the private hire for six of us. They let us keep the terrace an extra half hour and nobody rushed us out.
